These bi-colored gems are called ametrine, and are cut at the seam where the mineral colorations change. These stones are usually cut quite large, running from 6 to 85 carats. Although the rough stone comes from a Bolivian mine, our ametrine is all cut in Thailand, a country known for having some of the world's finest gem-cutters. The gems we carry are all perfectly clear and free of inclusions. We carefully select each one for its depth of color, gem quality (also known as "sparkle") and intrinsic beauty. The variety of color combinations we carry right now is not only unusual, but many combinations have only been recently discovered and mined. The intensity of the color speaks for itself. No one really knows how long this mine will continue to produce these stunning stones. For example, in the 1980's bi-colored and watermelon tourmaline seemed abundant and today it is rarely available. These ametrine gems are to be treasured for the beautiful works of nature and specimens of exquisite faceting that they are. A bit of interesting history about ametrine: The Anahi Mine in Bolivia is the major world producer of ametrine. The mine first became famous in the 17th century when a Spanish conquistadore received it as a dowry when he married a princess from the Ayoreos tribe named Anahi. Ametrine was introduced to Europe by the conquistadore's gifts to the Spanish queen. The pieces shown are unique and set in 14K gold, waiting for you to cherish as your own. Each stone has a special presence and personality that defines its unique beauty. Many pieces use a free-form gold design, others have ring shanks with designs hand-tooled into the band.
